The Riviera of New York City and the Astoria Park pool

Two Depression-era recreation centers — the Orchard Beach bathhouse and promenade in the Bronx, and the Astoria Park pool and play center in Queens — have been designated landmarks by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

Orchard Beach is one of Pelham Bay Park’s most distinctive features. Even though the beach itself is relatively new, visitors dating back to the early Native American tribes walked the area’s beaches and nearby islands for hundreds of years. While the beach’s name recalls the orchards that once graced private estates in the area, the site is in fact the product of a large public works project incorporating landfill and barge-loads of sand. The beach was one of Parks Commissioner Robert Moses’s (1888–1981) most beloved projects.

 Astoria Park, on the west shore of Queens, extends from south of the Triborough Bridge to north of the Hell Gate Bridge. With a panoramic view of the skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan in the south to the Hell Gate channel in the north, the scenery presents the diverse landscape of New York City. The Hell Gate channel, formed by faults deep underground, contains some of the deepest water in New York Harbor. Its treacherous reefs bear picturesque names such as “Hen and Chickens,” “Pot Rock,” “Bread & Cheese,” and “Bald Headed Billy.”

Living conditions for some in Bronx

“Everything you have, I have too,” Carmen Johnson, a tenant at 333 E. 176 St., said in Spanish. “No security, no windows. The rats walk us up the stairs. What we need to do is show the Rent Guidelines Board this is not just happening to one person.”

25 Bronxites are meeting in St. Margaret Mary’s dimly lit church gymnasium yesterday paid under $1,000 in rent, many were on fixed-incomes and none could afford to pay much more, let alone pay for repairs.

The meeting was one of many the Northwest Bronx Community & Clergy Coalition has been holding in local churches to rally residents for the June 19 Rent Guidelines Board public hearing.

Good renting deals in NY still exist, but you just have to find them.  According to NYT article, there are plenty of one-bedrooms renting for $1,000 to about $1,150 in Manhattan area. The average one-bedroom in a non-doorman building ranges from about $1,850 in Hell's Kitchen to $2,850 in SoHo or TriBeCa, according to Citi Habitats' Black & White Report on rentals in the borough. Brooklyn and Queens have many great rentals with great bargains and web sites such as Rent.com have lots of listings and often lead to good neighborhoods that buyers might not have considered exploring.

Bronx Terminal Market-promises benefits and jobs to the community

City Council  approved the controversial Gateway Center at the Bronx Terminal Market. The mall is supposed to bring 5,000 temporary and permanent jobs to the state’s only county with a double-digit unemployment rate. Here are some more of the details pf the plan:

The supporters’ case was bolstered in recent months by the crafting of a community benefits agreement. The contract signed by the developer, the Related Companies, promises to provide money and services to local residents.

The district’s Council member Maria del Carmen Arroyo touted the benefits of the agreement, which include $3 million over nine years for a job training program as well as a 3,500-square-foot facility offering discount child care. The pact also promises to set aside jobs for residents and retail space for local business.

“This community benefits agreement will serve as a model not just for the city but for our nation,” Arroyo said. “The developers in this city, I hope you’re paying attention, because it’s only going to get better.”

The Bronx Terminal Market near Yankee Stadium now has fewer than 30 fruit and vegetable wholesalers.

Alternatives to the Metro Cards

This spring some subway riders will get to toss out their MetroCards and zip through turnstiles with a wave of their credit card or key chain. The MTA is teaming up with MasterCard and Citigroup to put "smart card" readers at turnstiles on the 4, 5 and 6 lines in Manhattan, as well as two key outerborough hubs.

Mayor Bloomberg's plan to drop a new Yankee Stadium down atop two Bronx parks comes with a price of  $444 million in rent and tax breaks, free land, and state-subsidized parking garages.Earlier last year, the mayor has insisted that the project's benefits outweigh the costs. However, according to the report by private consultants Economics Research Associates, city and state tax benefits from the project over 30 years would total just $225 million—barely enough to repay half the public cost.

"It was immediately obvious that this is not a rational investment," says Dan Steinberg of Good Jobs New York, which unearthed the report via a freedom-of-information request and will release a full analysis later this month. "There's a perception that the South Bronx community has to take one for the team. But it's actually taxpayers that share the burden of this project."

Reactions of some Bronx residents on the Yankees proposed building an $800 million, 53,000-seat stadium that the team would pay for entirely. The city would replace the 22 acres the team wants for the stadium in the Mullaly and Macombs Dam parks with 28 acres of parks, ball fields and tennis courts.

"I'm a Yankee fan," Ernesto Maldonado, who lives just west of the Yankees' historic home, said during a noisy public hearing last month in the rotunda of the Bronx County Courthouse, where the team laid out its plans to build a new home in two neighborhood parks. The meeting attracted no fewer than 500 people, with dozens forced to wait outside.

"I'm totally opposed to this," he said. "We've never benefited from the stadium, and we don't believe we'll ever benefit from it."

"They just ignore this community," said Mary L. Blassingame, 64, a member of Community Board 4, whose district includes the stadium. "If they had been a good neighbor, they would not have put this plan through."

"We are not against the new stadium," said Pasquale Canale, a member of the community board, president of the 161st Street Merchants Association and the owner of the Hero Factory sandwich shop. "We're against taking parks away from the neighborhood and sandwiching that big stadium up against the apartment buildings right across the street."
